Paint Joondalup REaD

Paint Joondalup REaD is a community-led early literacy initiative driven by the Rotary Club of Joondalup. We help families across Joondalup build a daily reading habit so children aged 0–5 start school ready to learn, by placing accessible Red Book Boxes in local centres and community spaces.

What we’re doing

Red Book Boxes across Joondalup — free, family-friendly book hubs in early learning centres, schools and community venues.
Practical resources for parents and carers — PTTR starter materials and multilingual booklets that show how everyday reading and play grow young brains.
Local identity & engagement — a Joondalup-themed mascot inspired by the region’s black cockatoo for events and story time.

This project is supported by the City of Joondalup through its Community Funding Program (2024/25 Round 2 – Small Grant). We acknowledge the City’s contribution and thank them for helping bring more books and literacy resources to local families.

Partners & host sites

We partner with early learning centres, schools and community organisations to host Red Book Boxes and support family reading. If your centre or organisation would like to participate, we’d love to hear from you.

Get involved

Host a Red Book Box at your centre or venue
Donate new or near-new children’s books (ages 0–5)
Volunteer to help with box maintenance or community reading events

Mascot Design Competition

We’re inviting local creativity to help bring Paint Joondalup REaD to life! Our community needs a mascot that represents Joondalup and inspires families to read, sing, and rhyme every day.

Who can enter:
Students in Years 4–6 living in the City of Joondalup.

What to design:
A fun, friendly mascot that appeals to young children and reflects our local community—think native animals or symbols unique to Joondalup. Consider how your design could work as a costume or hand puppet.

Prizes:
The winning design will become the official Paint Joondalup REaD mascot, with a $100 gift certificate for the winner and $100 gift certificate for books to the school of the winner.

How to enter:

Submit your drawing on A4 or A3 paper through email to joondaluprotary@gmail.com.
Include your name, age, school, and contact details.
Entries close 30 November 2025.

Important:
Parent/guardian consent is required for entries to be displayed and used in promotional activities.
